Current Practice Posterior urethral valves

چکیده
Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are the commonest cause of bladder outlet obstruction in children. With improvement of primary health care and widespread use of ultrasonography during antenatal check-up, early diagnosis of PUV has increased. The first description of PUV was made in 1919 by Hugh Hampton Young 1 . PUV represents a spectrum of severity, ranging from disease incompatible with postnatal life to that which is minimal and not presenting until later in life. Management of PUV remains a clinical challenge requiring active management from infancy into adulthood to prevent progressive dysfunction and deterioration of both the upper and lower urinary tracts.

Re: the anatomy and embryology of posterior urethral valves.
PURPOSE We reviewed the literature to better elucidate the history behind our understanding of the anatomy, classification and embryology of posterior urethral valves. MATERIALS AND METHODS A directed MEDLINE literature review of the anatomy, classification and embryology of posterior urethral valves was performed. An effort was made to focus on the most frequently cited historical articles a...
متن کاملPosterior urethral valves with vesical calculus: A rare association
Posterior urethral valve and vesical calculus are individually among the most common causes of obstructive lower urinary complaints in children. There are very few reports of association between posterior urethral valves and bladder calculus. We report three such cases. This association of the vesical calculi with posterior urethral valves may lead to a delay in the diagnosis of the posterior u...
متن کاملUrethral Duplication in the Setting of Posterior Urethral Valves
Urethral duplication is a genitourinary anomaly that may rarely present in conjunction with posterior urethral valves. The management algorithm of children affected by both these urologic conditions is still unknown, given the low incidence and the complexity of each of these conditions. We present our clinical experience with the management of a child with Y-type urethral duplication and poste...
متن کاملPosterior Urethral Valves: Renal Failure and Prenatal Treatment
Posterior urethral valves occur in 1 : 5000 live births. Despite the high prevalence, the few children that survive do poorly, with over 50% progressing to ESRD in 10 years. The gold standard for post-natal diagnosis is voiding cystourethrography, while pre-natal diagnosis is dependent on routine screening ultrasonography. Despite the ability to identify features of bladder outlet obstruction e...
متن کاملOutcome of Antenatally Presenting Posterior Urethral Valves (PUV) in Children.
BACKGROUND To analyze the outcome of children with posterior urethral valves who presented with antenatal hydronephrosis. METHODS A 10-year retrospective review of records of 70 children with posterior urethral valves. RESULTS The mean (SD) gestational age at diagnosis was 34 (4.48) weeks, and age at intervention was 130.5 (170.9) days. The nadir creatinine was significantly raised (<1.2 mg...
